RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Isolated strong thunderstorms are expected to continue Tuesday night and Wednesday as several factors influence the Commonwealth. The first is that high pressure to our east continues to move farther out into the Atlantic away from us, allowing rich transport of Atlantic tropical moisture around Tropical Depression Beryl in southeast Georgia right now up into the Carolinas and into Virginia. This is contributing to our continued warm and humid conditions today. After peak heating ends with sundown, any late afternoon and evening thunderstorms that affect us should weaken.  However, with an approaching upper-level trough from our northwest tonight, we’ll have another opportunity for strong storms to develop overnight into mid-day Wednesday, tracking eastward through Virginia ahead of the approaching surface cold front. These storms will likely have very heavy rainfall (because of the rich, tropical moisture moving into our region), frequent lightning, and gusty winds. But as for an overall severe threat, wind shear will be limited in Virginia. The cold front will track southeast through Virginia Wednesday afternoon, ending our rain and storm chances.
