Gloucester teen’s remarkable recovery after Hurricane Irene

GLOUCESTER, Va. (WTKR) - A Gloucester teen continues to beat the odds after being seriously injured in a Hurricane Irene-related` accident last year.

In fact, doctors never thought Morganne Roundy would ever run again, let alone train for a 5K without a miracle.

But Roundy said never gave up hope -- or stopped trying.

“It’s not over, so always keep fighting until you can’t fight any more,” she said.

Roundy was injured when her family was driving around Gloucester trying to get home when a tree fell on top of their van.

When that happpened, it knocked Roundy unconscious and caused severe brain damage, requiring two surgeries. Doctors had to remove part of her skull, and she had to wear a helmet for weeks as she healed.

When WTKR-TV caught up with the teen in December, she still had trouble with her short-term memory and wasn’t allowed to run without supervision.

Already having missed school, Roundy was even more worried about not graduating. But she didn’t give up and fought even harder to recover.

Now she is getting ready to graduate from high school and is optimistic about the future.

“Everything has gotten back to normal and almost seems like it’s gotten better,” said Roundy.

She even said she feels as if she's doing more now and enjoying life to the fullest.

In turn, Roundy is now training for a 5K. That's just one of the ways she is beating the odds recovering.

“Something that could have had holds and chains on my life forever is now gone,” she said.
