Something special has been unearthed at the Virginia Historical Society.

The building where the Virginia Historical Society is located recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. The anniversary inspired the Vice-President of the society to do some research. When he did, he learned when the building was built, a time capsule featuring items from 1912 was placed in the cornerstone.

The time capsule includes items such as newspaper clippings, photographs, postcards, architectural drawings, Civil War signatures and a small Confederate battle flag.

“We weren’t sure exactly what we would find. We didn’t know if the box would be full of a bunch of dust because it all disintegrated or got moldy. But it was dry as a bone. Everything was in perfect condition,” says Paul Levengood, President and CEO of the Virginia Historical Society.

Architects, builders and brick layers worked for days to located the cornerstone where the time capsule was located and get it out.

Eventually, the items from the time capsule will go on permanent display at the Virginia Historical Society.
