RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -  More than 6,000 people took a stand against cancer Saturday morning by running in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Brown's Island.

Organizers said the fifteenth local race fell short of the 10,000 participants organizers had hoped to attract. However, it was only 15-percent below last year 's 7,300 participants.

The smaller number may have been due to a controversy that erupted when the national Komen organization decided last fall that it would not fund Planned Parenthood breast cancer screenings.

It was a decision that was later revoked.
