HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Several post offices in Central Virginia that were slated to be shut down will stay open after the US Postal Service reversed a decision to close small and rural locations.

CBS 6 News Senior Reporter Wayne Covil caught with some folks at their local post offices Thursday. [REALTED: US Postal Service may keep rural offices]

As they learned about the news, folks Covil chatted with were pleased.

"I get a lot of packages and send a lot of registered mail and so I do need some service," said Ginger Caskey, who frequents the Oilville Post Office.

Tom Lind is also glad the branch is staying open.

"It's very convenient for me mailing packages and things for my business," said Lind. "Otherwise, I would have to drive quite a ways past Short Pump into Glen Allen."

If that location had been shuttered, Charles Hayes said he would have had to drive much farther, down to the smaller Gum Springs Post Office.

At the Studley Post Office, the doors will also remain open, but hours at the location have been reduced from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"You can work around a couple of hours. It's a whole different proposition if you have to work around a different location," said Darren Waggoner. "The larger locations are fine, [but] obviously they're not as convenient and there seems to always be a line… Here, you can… conduct your business and be on your way."
