The 31-year-old said that as a kid he felt disconnected from his body and has a condition called gender dysphoria. He will take hormones and undergo electrolysis. He is considering gender reassignment surgery.

“Growing up, my experience with transsexualism was nothing but shame,” said Gabel.

Gabel told Rolling Stone that his new name will be Laura Jane Grace. He says he’s not attracted to men and will still be married to his wife, who has been “super-amazing.” They have a 2-year-old daughter.

As Rolling Stones said, this is the first time a major rock star has come out as transgender, and so Gabel has made a point of speaking openly about it.

An interview with Gabel will be featured in the June issue of Rolling Stone (click link for preview) which hits newsstands Friday, May 11.
