RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Hulk smashed. Iron Man rocked. And Thor hammered home a big win at the box office this weekend, making sales history.  "The Avengers" set a new record for U.S. weekend box office sales, amounting to 200.3 million dollars from Friday through Sunday. Even though the film did not open in the U.S. until Friday, it was released a week earlier internationally. As a result of global sales, the film has raked in almost 642 million dollars in 12 days.

"The Avengers," a joint project between Marvel and Disney, beat the Harry Potter film franchise finale from last year, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which was the record-holder for the best opening weekend of a film in the U.S. of 169.1 million dollars.

The other most-watched movies this weekend in the U.S. include "Think Like A Man" in second place, and the still surviving big seller "The Hunger Games," both of which earned less than ten million dollars.
