PETERSBURG, Va.(WTVR) - Police are investigating an accident that killed a Petersburg business owner on Johnson Road near Petersburg High School .

Petersburg Police Spokeswoman Esther Hyatt said 42-year-old Tammie Dingas was killed in the accident.

Dingas was the owner of the popular “Curl up and Dye” Salon on Sycamore Street in Old Towne Petersburg

When officers arrived on the scene they found a woman about 100 yards from the crashed vehicle. They believe she'd been ejected from the car. She was pronounced  dead on the scene.

A short time later police discovered a man who'd apparently been wandering  through the woods -- after becoming  disoriented in the crash.

"He, after the crash, had walked through the woodline to the intersection of Matoax and Sunset roads," Hyatt there. "Then he found an unlocked car, got inside and fell asleep. He was discovered by a citizen going to work."

The woman called police, and they were able to piece together the man's story. He was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center and is expected to recover.

It's believed that this was a single car accident. Police do not yet know the cause, but are investigating if morning fog played a role in the accident.

The accident occurred about one mile from Petersburg High School. A detour was set-up to help traffic get around the accident investigation.

A portion of Johnson Road was closed during the investigation.
