CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR)--A Chesterfield Police Officer and the man police say assaulted him were both taken to the hospital Saturday night after a confrontation.
Police say the officer responded to a call for a disabled motorist on Woodsedge Rd. at the Interstate 95 overpass. Upon arrival, police say the officer found a man sitting outside of the vehicle with a bottle of vodka in his hand.
When the officer approached, investigators say the man threw the vodka bottle at the officer, striking him. The suspect then jumped off the bridge, landing in the median 30 ft. below.
Police identified the suspect as Jayvonn Clemmons, 26, of the 5600 block of Erich Ct. in Richmond. Clemmons and the officer were both taken to area hospitals.
While the officer was treated and released, Clemmons remains at VCU Medical Center after suffering serious injuries from the fall.
Clemmons will be charged with assaulting the officer, and he also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on a previous DUI charge.
