While the United States has been trying to disgust smokers into giving up tobacco with graphic warning labels, New Zealand has been considering a more direct idea: raising the price of cigarettes to $100 a pack.
The ministry of health wants a smoke-free country by 2025. He says the $100 price tag would be implemented by 2020. However, officials admit the plan may be a bit unrealistic.
Another option being considered would be to increase the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes 10 percent each year from 2013 to 2025 – eventually costing $40 a pack.
