DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – Virginia State Police and the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office announced the indictment of former Dinwiddie County Deputy-Sheriff, Jeffrey C. McKenney.

A Dinwiddie County Grand Jury indicted McKenney, 32, of Petersburg, on April 17, 2012, on one felony count of obtaining money by false pretense.

Investigators said McKenney was under investigation for committing fraud while on-duty last November. State police said that investigation was on-going.

“I would like to inform the citizens of Dinwiddie County that this incident occurred before I took office on January 1, 2012. When I took office, I did not re-appoint McKenney as a deputy-sheriff,” Dinwiddie County Sheriff D. T. “Duck” Adams said in a statement.

Further details about the investigation were not released.

McKenney, who turned himself in Tuesday morning, was given a $2,500 bond pending his arraignment on May 8, 2012 in Dinwiddie County Circuit Court.
