CHARLES CITY, Va (WTVR) -  A funeral service for a Charles City County Sheriff’s deputy killed on the job last weekend.

Hundreds packed the Samaria Baptist Church Friday to pay tribute to 36-year-old Deputy Michael Walizer.

Family and friends described him as a devoted husband and father who enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing and relic hunting.

They said he served his community with joy and pride.

But last Saturday, his life was cut short while responding to an assistance call for a traffic stop. Walizer lost control of his police cruiser, hit a tree and then died.

“I wouldn’t be a law enforcement officer for all the money in the world.  But these guys, my two sons and all of the rest of you that have us here in the County and through the state, we appreciate everything you do.  Sometimes we don’t say it, but we do,” said Floyd Miles Sr., Charles City County Board of Supervisor.

He is survived by his wife and four children, three sons aged 1, 9 and 10 and an 11-year-old daughter.
