Memorial set up for family of deputy killed in crash

CHARLES CITY, Va (WTVR) -  A memorial fund has been set up at BB&T bank for the family of Charles City County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Walizer. Walizer died early Saturday morning in a dingle vehicle crash.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar of Virginia State Police says Walizer was responding to assist another deputy, who was on a traffic stop, when his 2008 Ford Crown Victoria marked patrol cruiser veered off the road on Rt 5. around 2 a.m, striking a tree.

Walizer, who was wearing his safety belt, died at the scene, according to police.

He is survived by his wife and four children, three sons aged 1, 9 and 10 and an 11-year-old daughter. Funeral arrangements are not available at this time.

The crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and the Charles City and New Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
