Richmond has second warmest March on record

Richmond International Airport just ended the second warmest March on record.  When you average up all of the highs and lows, the monthly average temperature was 58.3°.  This missed the record by only two-tenths of a degree!  The warmest March ever was back in 1945 when the monthly average temperature was 58.5°.

Here are some other warm stats about March 2012:

  • 19 days of 70° or warmer (7 is normal) —  this ties the record from 1945.
  • 8 days of 80° or warmer (2 is normal) — this is the second highest number for March.  The record was 10 days in 1945.
  • A record 13 consecutive days of 70° or warmer during the period of March 12-24.  This was longest streak of 70°+ days in March history for Richmond.

This warm month was also a bit dry.  The total precipitation for March was 2.51″, which was 1.53″ below normal.   There was also 0.5″ of snow, bringing the winter total for Richmond to 4.5″, which was almost 6″ below normal.
