RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Leading toy maker Mattel is taking action on a suggestion from Facebook for the next addition to one of its most recognizable brands. The company is adding a bald Barbie to its line-up of dolls. This idea came from an ongoing campaign on Facebook by fans to create the toy to help kids who suffer from hair loss as a result of intense cancer treatments and other medical conditions, like alopecia. "Bald Barbie" will come with wigs, hats, scarves and other accessories.
If you're hoping to buy this special Barbie from a toy store soon, that is not in the works right now. Unlike a regular Barbie doll, the bald dolls will not be found on store shelves. Instead, Mattel says it will give the dolls directly to children who have been most affected by hair loss through the Children's Hospital Association. The company says it will also give dolls to Children's Cancer Foundations.
Production for the "Bald Barbie" is expected to begin next year in 2013.
