MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - The Montgomery County Sheriff said investigators now have the DNA evidence in the 2009 murders of Virginia Tech students Heidi Childs and David Metzler.

Sheriff Tommy Whitt said that in addition to having the killer's DNA, investigators have determined the couple was killed with a .30 caliber rifle.

Childs and Metzler were visiting Jefferson National Park in August of 2009 when a triggerman fired a .30 caliber rifle at them, killing the both.

The task force has been working the case since.

“We are aggressively, and actively pursuing you,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Whitt today.

Donald Childs, the father of Heidi, and a former state trooper, spoke exclusively with CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett.

Childs says that  DNA is better than a fingerprint and that this new development makes him optimistic that law enforcement are close to capturing the killer.

There’s a $70,000 dollar reward in this case. Sheriff Whitt said his department will not give up on this case until the suspect is behind bars and justice is served.
