RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - In Feb. 2000, the State Fair of Virginia was talking about moving from its location at Richmond International Raceway in Henrico County . One of the locations talked about for the new fair was in eastern Henrico County near Interstate 295.
The move to eastern Henrico never happened.
In an article published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on August, 31, 2001, reporter Chris Dovi wrote:
A contract on a 320-acre site in eastern Henrico where it originally planned to relocate expired in March. [Atlantic Rural Exposition President Otis] Brown cited numerous obstacles encountered in securing that property, including difficulties acquiring utilities easements and a major county-stipulated road improvement, as making relocation to eastern Henrico unlikely if not prohibitive.
It took a few more years, but the State Fair of Virginia did eventually move, not east, but north.
In 2009 the State Fair of Virginia moved to Meadow Event Park near Kings Dominion.
In 2012 the State Fair of Virginia filed for bankruptcy. [Click here for more]
