CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR)--Neighbors in one Chesterfield county apartment complex awoke Tuesday morning to the cracking sound of gunfire.
Tenants in the community are worried that the gunman may have targeted someone living their unit.
"I was sitting on my bed and all of the sudden I heard pow, pow, pow,” said Jessica Skeens. "I had the baby and everything and I just got him and ran in the hallway."
Skeens and others—all scared--discovered that someone had opened fire on several apartment units. “I couldn't believe anything like that happened around this area,” said Skeens.
Neighbors said the bullets struck three cars before ricocheting into the building, the bullet holes are still visible.
"We saw it under the stairs come from around this side,” said Izze Turlington. "And realized it had hit my neighbor’s door.
The bullet hit there and then bounced and then landed on the floor. That's where Turlington found the bullet.
Chesterfield police are still investigating the shooting. In the meantime, neighbors tell us the gates don’t work and that the lack of security at the Chesterfield Village apartments may have something to do with the shooting.
Neighbors say they’ve complained to management on numerous occasions.
Skeens said it concerns here that anyone can ride through the complex since the gate doesn’t work.
An employee told us that the corporate office is working on the gate, but she couldn't tell us when it would be fixed.
"Just because we pay lower rent because it's affordable doesn't mean we have to allow ourselves to be at risk of being killed,” said Turlington.
Now, CBS 6 is still trying to reach out to management, but they haven’t returned our phone calls.
Chesterfield police are searching for the gunman in this case. If you have any information, call Crimesolvers at 748-0660.
