RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Kent Willis, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union Virginia told CBS 6, after 25 years, he is calling it quits. This comes during what Willis called the worst year in state politics he can recall.
Willis said he’s never seen lawmakers try and take so much control.
“We need control of what you’re doing. We want to control who comes to the polls, we want to control the relationship between women and their physician,” said Willis.
Willis said he’s seen a lot, especially following September 11, 2001. He’s handled nearly 300 cases, including the government’s no fly-list and police tracking criminals discretely using GPS.
While Willis is leaving the ACLU, he said 6 he’ll keep fighting for felons, who under Virginia law, lose their voting rights once convicted.
“Virginia has the most restrictive, antiquated, felon disenfranchisement law in the nation,” said Willis.
