RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Virginia Commonwealth University has made headlines lately for the men’s basketball program. Yet just last week VCU pulled in top honors in another category; as one of the 2013 best fine arts schools.

The U.S. News & World Report ranked VCU as the nation’s top public graduate program in the Fine Arts category. The VCU School of Arts ranked fourth overall, coming in behind three private universities (Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago) and tying with UCLA.

The publication as ranked the school’s specialties as such:

#1 Sculpture

#5 Graphic Design

#7 Painting

#9 Ceramics

#10 Printmaking

#13 Photography

#14 Multimedia / Visual Communications (tied with Syracuse)

The master of fine arts program rankings are based solely on the results of a peer assessment survey.

“We recruit and attract some of the most renowned professional artists to join our faculty and, in turn, this draws applications from the top students in the nation and around the world,” said Joseph H. Seipel, Dean, School of the Arts, in a press release.

“As part of a research university, VCUarts students have the opportunity to pursue cross-disciplinary collaborations and to study alongside scholars from divergent fields.”

“We provide a stellar arts education within the context of a research university,” said Seipel.
