The next round of students admitted to University of California schools, all 10, could be asked to write down their sexual orientation.

In January, the Academic Senate recommended that students who have been accepted to the school should have the option of identifying themselves as lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender.

According to a CBS report, The UC Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools had mixed reactions but thought the question would help collect important statistical information.

Critics are concerned about privacy issues and the news has made front page on several college campus newspapers.

Supporters of the declaration said the information could help campuses better serve the LGBT community.

CBS reported that “some members of that community believe it would show that there are many more LGBT students than university officials realize.”

Others feel that the question should be optional, and remember all too well that students can easily become victims of prejudice.
