RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) - Hundreds of runners will be lacing up their sneakers and racing through the streets of north Richmond Saturday.

They'll be taking part in the Holton 5K run and the smallest tykes in the bunch will put their best feet forward in the one mile Holton hustle.

This is the 12th year Linwood Holton Elementary has presented this race.

The 5K starts at Laburnum and Hermitage roads and the course winds its' way through the Bellevue and Ginter Park areas. Holton Elementary students, parents and teachers will race, but that's not all.

Some runners use this as a practice for the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K. Organizers like Kantrese Smith say it draws in athletes of all ages and it's a great way to promote the importance of staying fit.

"This event encourages not just the students, but the parents and the whole family," Smith said. "It's like a family affair to come out, just get in shape, have fun and really promote health and physical fitness within the kids at the school as well as within their family."

The 5K starts at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. A community festival with food, games and entertainment for the family runs from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

If it rains, the festival will be moved inside the school.
