RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)-  Richmond Public School’s rezoning process is decades overdue. Each year, millions of your tax dollars are wasted as a result.  Wednesday night, school leaders revealed part of their plan to parents to solicit feedback.

The school system is looking to save money by closing select buildings that are underutilized because of population and demographic changes in some neighborhoods.

A few schools on the district’s short list to close include John B. Cary, Fisher and Summer Hill elementary.  Chair of the rezoning committee, Shonda Harris-Muhammed says, “it just makes good business sense.” Harris-Muhammed tells CBS 6, those schools aren’t even meeting 50% capacity.

The committee isn’t just looking at school closures as a more efficient option, but, it’s also looking at finding a new purpose for some schools. “We can make Fisher a K-2 and John B. Cary a 3-5 or vice versa,” says Harris-Muhammed.
