On Monday, the murder trial of George Huguely V begins in Charlottesville, Virginia. Huguely is charged with first degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend and University of Virginia lacrosse player, Yeardley Love.

Huguely, 24, faces six charges in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend;  first-degree murder, felony murder, robbery, burglary, statutory burglary and grand larceny.

Twenty-one months have passed since Love’s body was discovered at 2:15 a.m., by her room mate who shared with Love an off-campus apartment located on 14th Street in Charlottesville.

Police have said, in court filings, that Huguely told them in a videotaped statement–that has not yet been heard in cour–that he kicked down Love’s bedroom door and fought with her.

Huguely has admitted to taking Love’s computer from her apartment after her death. Huguely told police that he saw blood dripping from Love’s nose, before he fled the scene. He pushed her back down on the bed, stole her computer which contained e-mails exchanged between the two, and fled, according to documents in the case.

Jury selection starts on Monday, and continues Tuesday. The trial is expected to span two weeks.

Love was 22 years of age when she was found face down in a pillow on May 3, 2010. Both Love and Huguely were fourth year lacrosse players at UVA, who had known each other since high school.

A state medical examiner has ruled that Love died of blunt force trauma to the head. In November, a judge ruled that attorneys will get access to Love’s medical records. The defense has said it plans to explore if medication or alcohol, or both, were factors in Love’s death.

Huguely continues to be held without bond at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.

A large media presence will descend on the town, as well as a sizable presence from the general public.

The City of Charlottesville, population around 45,000, has been modeling it’s preparations for the Huguely trial after the Washington D.C. Sniper trial which took place in Chesapeake.
