RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) - A father was upgraded to stable condition Wednesday after he was shot inside his South Richmond apartment.
Richmond Police said the man was shot around 6:40 p.m. Monday night. The apartment complex is located on the 3700 block of Angela Drive.
The man's wife and three children were in the home at the time.
The victim's wife says they were getting ready to start dinner and homework, when she says, her husband noticed some broken glass FROM THE BACK DOOR.
As he was cleaning the mess, police say he grabbed a hammer. Thets when the family came face to face with two armed robbers.
The family says the suspects were hiding in an upstairs bathroom.
When one of the three kids ran up there to use it. They say a few minutes later, the little girl came back downstairs with the two suspects and a gun pointed at her.
Police say when the men approached the father, he attacked the men with a hammer and hit one of the men in the face and head.
The other man shot the father with a small handgun.
Both men, according to police, wore bandanas to cover their faces.
Police believe the man hit with the hammer suffered serious enough injuries that he would need medical attention.
Police are still looking for both men who are described as black males in their late teens or early 20s with slim builds, wearing dark clothing.
Police considered both men to be armed and dangerous.
