About 700 people were on board the Metro-North trains when one of the trains derailed.

The derailed train was then hit by another train headed west back from New York’s Grand Central Station.

Investigators still aren’t sure what caused the first train to derail, but the accident sent 67 people to the hospital.

According to CNN, 11 of the 67 passengers were released by 9:45 p.m.

Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy says five are hospitalized with critical injuries.

The incident is still under investigation.

Virginia Lottery officials said the ticket was purchased at a Food Lion on the 1500 block of South Main Street in Farmville.

The winner has 180 days to claim the prize. The winner can take $95 million in 26 payments or a one-time cash option of $70.3 million before taxes.

This is Virginia’s 8th Mega Millions jackpot win.

If you want to double check your numbers, the winning numbers were 11-15-35-43-49 and the Mega Ball was 41.

Police say it happened during a botched armed robbery early Friday morning in a Long Island home.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Andrea Rebello.

According to police, Rebello’s twin sister and two other friends were in the house at the time of the break in but were not injured.

Officials say the suspect was wearing a ski mask and entered the home with a handgun.

The suspect was later killed during a shootout, but it’s still unclear who killed Rebello.

MURRAY, UT (KSTU) – A Utah mother is giving her daughter some tough love after learning she was bullying a classmate.

Kaylee, a fourth grader, was teasing a fellow student about her clothes, so her mom Ally decided to give her a taste of her own medicine.

Ally got an email from a teacher on Wednesday saying that her daughter had been relentlessly teasing another student about her clothes for the last three weeks. When Kaylee got home, Ally sat her down to talk to her. But Kaylee didn’t feel the least bit sorry.

So Ally decided to let Kaylee know what it feels like to be judged on what you wear. She went out to a thrift store and picked out some clothes for Kaylee, then made her wear them to school on Thursday and Friday.

(WTVR) — There’s good news for Candice Glover, who could barely remember her own name after she was crowned this season’s winner of “American Idol” on Thursday night.

Now for the bad news. Ratings for the finale dipped to a record low for the twelfth season of the Fox show.

In fact, Glover’s victory over Kree Harrison was watched by 14.2 million viewers, down 34 percent over last year, according to reports.

Last season previously held the title for the lowest rated “Idol” finale.

And among young adults, much sought after by advertisers, the show was also down about 40 percent versus last year.

Things will likely be different when the show returns next year. The judges panel is just one of the expected changes Fox plans to make to rejuvenate the show.

Meanwhile, the news is much brighter for Glover.

“I’m still trying to process the whole thing, I don’t even know what’s happening,” she told the press backstage. “It feels amazing though that I finally got to this point; I’ve been working for so long.”

The singer, who stunned judges and viewers with a remarkable performance of “Lovesong” earlier in the season, had tried out for “American Idol” twice before, making her third audition truly the charm. Candice, 23, is the first woman to win “American Idol” since season 6′s Jordin Sparks.

Yet “Idol’s” final stretch has been all about the ladies, as the final three included Candice, Kree Harrison and Angie Miller. Although Candice earned enough votes to surpass Kree, the singer said they’re both “super supportive of each other, and I know no matter what I’m going to buy Kree’s album, and I think the whole world will.”

Thursday’s “Idol” finale included performances from former “Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez, current judges Keith Urban and Mariah Carey, and former “Idol” star Jennifer Hudson, who sang “Inseparable” with Candice.

While the new “American Idol” hasn’t started on her album yet, fans have a taste of what’s to come with “I Am Beautiful,” which is Candice’s first single.

“When I first heard the song, I was in tears, because I connect with the song so much. It’s not only about a girl that’s been done wrong by her ex-boyfriend, but, like with me, being attacked all the time, and being told that you’re not good enough, or you’re not as pretty as you should be. … That song is a message to everybody that ever said that to me, as well as all these girls that are growing up and feeling that they’re not beautiful. I think it’s connects with a lot of people in their hearts.”

It took Candice a few tries to get to this point on “Idol,” but the lessons learned along the way were worth it.

“I think I definitely learned how to be confident and how to be myself and be OK with who I am,” she said. “In previous seasons, I was doing what I thought America wanted, or what the judges wanted, but this year I did whatever I wanted to do. Hence why I would do a rapper’s song on the show, or why I would do The Cure when nobody expected me to. In previous seasons, I wouldn’t have done any of that, because I wasn’t comfortable in who I was. But I think that’s the difference between now and other seasons.”

OAKLAND, Calif. (WTVR) —  Police have released the names of two men killed while heading home from a Golden State Warriors game Thursday.

KPIX reports that 30-year-old Christopher Beardon, of Pittsburg, Calif., and 28-year-old Terrance Marks, of Richmond, Calif., were shot while driving on Highway 880 near the Jackson Street exit.

That’s when the California Highway Patrol said someone in a dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside the Porsche and opened fired just after 10:30 Thursday night.

The highway patrol said the victims’ car slammed into a guardrail and veered across several lanes of traffic.

Both victims died at the scene.

NEW YORK (CNN) — A 21-year-old Hofstra University junior was fatally shot early Friday in an exchange of gunfire between a suspected home invader and police who came to the house, officials said.

Andrea Rebello lived with her twin sister in an off-campus house in Uniondale, New York. A male suspect wearing a black ski mask forced his way into the residence which the sisters shared with two other students, according to police.

At some during the night, the twins’ female roommate was able to leave the home and call police, a Nassau County police spokesman told CNN on Friday.

When police arrived, there was an exchange of gunfire that left Andrea and the suspect dead. Police say the source of the gunfire that killed Rebello is still under investigation.

It was not immediately know whether the suspect knew the students. Armed robbery was believed to the motive for the home invasion.

Andrea’s high school principal, Carol Conklin-Spillane, said the girls’ home community in Westchester, New York, was heartbroken.

She described Andrea as a fun-loving, personable and self-aware young woman. The sisters were a perfectly complemented “match set.”

“There are twins who are just siblings and there are twins who are close, and then there was Andrea and Jessica,” she said. “They were best friends by choice.”

Conklin-Spillane said while on her way to Sleepy Hollow High School in New York she heard a student had been killed.

“I remember saying to myself that some mother’s heart will be broken today,” she said. “Never did I imagine it could be one of our community members.”

Andrea’s parents, Fernando and Nella Rebello, are closely tied to the Portuguese community, and always worked to create opportunities for their children, Conklin-Spillane said. The family was extremely close, she said.

Friday was the last day of finals at Hofstra University, right before graduation weekend. The university said in a statement that the commencement ceremonies will go on as scheduled. Andrea Rebello was majoring in public relations.

According to WTKR, leaders announced Friday that SEAL Jonathan Kaloost died after the Humvee he was riding in rolled over during convoy training at Fort Knox in Kentucky.

The surviving service members, all from Naval Special Warfare Group 2 based at Little Creek, were treated for minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital.

“The Naval Special Warfare community is deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” said Capt. Robert Smith, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Group TWO, in a statement. “Our thoughts and our prayers go out to the family and friends of our fallen teammate and those injured in the accident. A thorough investigation into the incident is underway.”

He’s right.

Consider that in 1999, there were 54,323 pay phones in Virginia.

Ten years later, in 2009, that number had dropped to 17,501.

Last year in the state there were 5,591 pay phones.

And that’s been halved again in 2013, down to 2,874 phones in the Old Dominion.

Older people who haven’t bought into the cell phone world and poor people have really  been hung up on.

Pay phones and phone booths were once a crucial part of American life. Many of us older folks can remembers the sights, the sounds, the smells of public phones.

Even younger Richmond residents like Alonzo Washington remember how critical pay phones were when family members tied up the house phone.

“I’d sneak out and go use the pay phone to talk to one of my little girlfriends I used to have when I was younger.”

Where would’ve Superman been without his changing closet. What would Hollywood have done without the pay phone?

Now cell phones are so cheap and pervasive, hardly anyone needs a pay phone.

Unless you don’t have a cell phone.  Or if you pay by the minute for your cell.  Why burn up all your minutes for a long call or when you’re put on hold while trying to talk to your doctor when you can chat forever for 35 cents?

“I’ve got a brother who is a retired, decorated police officer,” said William Kennard of Ashland. “And he had brain trauma. I talk to him a few times a week and I’m running out of minutes (on his cell phone) and I hate to cut him off.

“Every time I found one (a pay phone) that was working,” he added, “I’d come back and it would be gone the next week.”

When Hurricane Sandy hit New York City, the benefits of a land line hit home. There were long lines at the pay phones that were still working. The Big Apple recently staged a design competition for modern pay phones that can do a lot more. Existing pay phone can be used as neighborhood tour guides. You dial a certain number, and a noted neighborhood resident from that area talks about how it used to be there.

Here in Virginia, Verizon completely got out of the pay phone business in late 2011.

Their phones were bought out by Jaroth Inc. of California, which has about 1,500 pay phones in Virginia, according to the State Corporation Commission. Most of the other 46 pay phone providers in the state operate  just one or a few phones.

There’s no question cell phones have changed our world. They’re convenient, so smart. But we seem more immersed in their little screens than in much of the world around us.

William Kennard believes we should hang up and live . . . pull off or walk a block or two to talk on a good, old-fashioned pay phone.

It happened around 6 p.m. Friday evening in a shopping center parking lot of Rittenhouse Drive.

According to Chesterfield police all the children were under the age of 8 years old and were examined by Chesterfield Fire Department EMS personnel before being released to a family member.

Their mother has been charged with three counts of felony child neglect and is scheduled to appear in Chesterfield Juvenile and Domestic Court on May 20, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.

The temperature outside at the time was about 80 degrees.

“The men and women who have come forward in this lawsuit are so brave. They’ve taken a stand and put a face to all of those other survivors,” said Miranda Petersen with Protect our Defenders, a support group for military members. “Rape and sexual assault is an epidemic in our military right now.”

Twenty-five women and 3 men who serve or have served in the military and claim to have been raped or sexually assaulted are appealing a lower court’s ruling that upholds the law stating that soldiers, sailors airmen and marines cannot sue the military for injuries.

“That is why this case is so important,” said Petersen. “The majority of military members who are raped or sexually assaulted aren’t seeing justice in their cases and don’t have any other avenue if the military fails them.”

According to the Department of Defense only a fraction of the 19,000 rapes and sexual assaults in the military each year are reported.

Brian Lewis says he was raped by a superior in the U.S. Navy while serving on board a ship in 2000. Brian says his rapist was never prosecuted. Brian was discharged in 2001. He is not one of the plaintiff’s in the case.

“It is a very strong act of patriotism to say that the military hurt us intentionally,” said Lewis. “That is the same thing that every survivor feels that they can’t reach out and get help when in fact they can. And that is what essentially what we’re asking the 4th Circuit to do. Is to give us help to hold the military accountable.”

Petersen says many victims who do step forward are often ostracized and humiliated.

“We have men and women who have signed up to serve their country and possibly give their lives and we’re not protecting them from people in their own ranks and that is absolutely unacceptable,” she said.

Plaintiffs are demanding action when dealing sexual assaults in the ranks of the armed forces, but some legal analysts say the case while shining a light on a serious issue will unlikely lead to a victory in court.

CBS6 legal analyst Todd Stone says the plaintiffs probably will not win the appeal, but might win a public relations victory.

“There is good reason to have immunity in the system. If you’re in the military and you’re injured you can’t just sue the military,” said Stone. “Although this case where they might not be on great legal ground it brings a lot of things to the attention of the Department of Defense and it might make some real policy changes.”

“I think this is the most important thing to take away from in this case is that it really draws attention to the lack of recourse members of the military have,” said Petersen.

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to make its ruling in the next few months.

Most everyone in this Northside neighborhood had the same reaction:  “It’s deeply concerning.  We’ve had nothing close to that in the years I’ve been here,” said Paul Coakley.

But Friday afternoon’s serenity was pierced by the popping sound of a paintball gun and a man falling off his bike after he was hit in the eye.

“One of the things I love about this neighborhood is people get out and walk and stroll with their kids in strollers,” said neighbor Richard Wells.”  “And to think that someone is driving by and picking people off is frightening.”

Richmond police say on top of the bicyclist’s injury, a woman passing by was also nicked by a paintball.  Police are looking for a triggerman that leaned out of a moving box-like white car, opening fire.

Neighbors are stunned it happened here.  “Clearly if you’re in this neighborhood, you don’t expect that there’s dangerous people milling around looking for trouble,” said Wells.

Police are looking for multiple suspects in that white box-like car.  According to police the victim required stitches to his eye, but they don’t believe there will be permanent damage.

In fact, city leaders are offering qualified employees a chance to retire early and get a lump sum of money to sweeten the deal.

“It gives us the opportunity to get substantial savings and personnel,” said Kathy Graziano, 4th District member of Richmond City Council. ”The budget is tight. We have balanced the budget next year on some of those savings.”

Mayor Dwight Jones presented the plan to city council in March as part of his Bi-Annual city budget proposal that’s expected to save the city millions.

Leaders said the voluntary retirement incentive program is a way to balance the budget and maximize city resources without having to layoff employees.

“Private industry does it all the time and it apparently works for them. And I am hoping it will work for us, too,” Graziano said.

Under Richmond’s Voluntary Incentive program:

• City employees who are 55 years old and worked at least 25 years are eligible.
• If a city employee is 65 years of age and worked at least 5 years, they’re also eligible.
• The city is also willing to give workers who have at least 33 years of experience anywhere from $7500 to $22,000 to retire.
• However, city employees who agree to take the buyout, and then decide to go back into the workforce, could face challenges.

“The problem is that the employment market is loaded wtih jobs. But many of the jobs are being unfilled because employers are a little bit reluctant to fill them at this point right now. Not knowing what’s happening to the economy,” said Elinor Burstein, President, Placement Professionals, Incorporated.

Executive Search Consultant and career coach Elinor Burstein says be prepared to make a lot less and compete with college grads.

“They’re doing internships and by the time they graduate college, they actually have work experience in their field,” said Burstein. ”And obviously commanding less money than a person that’s going to be working at 55 years old.”

Under the voluntary retirement incentive program, city workers who qualify would have to wait six months or up to a year to reapply for a city job.

If the plan is approved by city council, qualified employees could retire as early as this Fall.

Richmond offered the same program back in 1990 and 1991. City leaders say 389 eligible employees of which 253 (65%) participated in 1990. In 1991, 619 employees were eligible and 285 (46%) took advantage of the program.

(CNN) — A 30-year-old Uzbek national who has been arrested on federal terrorism charges pleaded not guilty in an initial appearance in a Boise, Idaho, court Friday.

A hearing on bail for Fazliddin Kurbanov, 30, is scheduled for Tuesday, and the trial is set for July 2.

A grand jury in Boise returned a three-court indictment charging Kurbanov, with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization, one count of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device.

A grand jury in Salt Lake City, Utah, returned a separate indictment charging him with one count of distribution of information relating to explosives, destructive devices and weapons of mass destruction.

Kurbanov, who is in the United States legally, was arrested Thursday in Boise.

“One of our highest priorities is disrupting potential acts of terrorism. The coordinated investigation, arrest, and indictments in this case demonstrate the commitment of all involved to do just that,” U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah David B. Barlow said in a statement announcing the arrest.

It was not immediately clear whether Kurbanov had retained counsel.

According to the Idaho indictment, he is alleged to have knowingly conspired with others to support to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an American-designated foreign terrorist organization, between August and May.

He is accused of having provided support, believing that it was to be used in an “offense involving the use of a weapon of mass destruction,” the statement said.

In Utah, he is alleged to have taught and demonstrated how to make bombs, by showing Internet videos and conducting instructional shopping trips.

NEW: 2 hospitals are treating dozens of patients, 3 of them in serious condition

(CNN) — Two Metro-North passenger trains heading in opposite directions collided during rush hour Friday evening in southwestern Connecticut, damaging both trains and leaving dozens injured, authorities said.

A train heading from New Haven to New York City derailed around 6:10 p.m., hitting the other train in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Metro-North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said. That caused some cars on the second train, which was destined for New Haven, to likewise leave the tracks.

A passenger in a middle car of the New York-bound train, Chris Martin, said his car went dark after the crash, then someone over the intercom “called all the doctors up front.” Officials said injuries were not life-threatening.

He and others aboard his “pretty full train” were evacuated, most of them physically fine if emotionally shaken. But there were also signs of injuries, as Martin said he personally saw eight or nine ambulances and a number of wounded people on stretchers.

Brian Alvarez, who saw the wreckage, described the scene as “pretty graphic.”

“I saw this one car and it was completely destroyed and they were pulling people out of the car,” Alvarez said. “… They were all bloody.”

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch later told reporters that, while the crash and damage was significant, he didn’t know of any life-threatening injuries.

John Cappiello, a spokesman for Bridgeport Hospital, gave a similar assessment. Two people hurt in the derailment were in serious condition at that hospital, one with a facial injury and another with a leg injury, he said.

St. Vincent’s Medical Center, also in Bridgeport, was treating 27 patients from the incident, hospital spokeswoman Lucinda Ames said. One of those was in serious condition, while the rest had minor injuries like “you might get in a car accident.”

Power has been shut off along the line and service has been halted — westbound past Bridgeport, which is about 60 miles northeast of New York City on the Long Island Sound, and eastbound beyond South Norwalk — because of the derailment.

Amtrak also announced early Friday night that it had suspended all travel between New York and Boston indefinitely after the crash.

Bridgeport’s mayor said such travel headaches could persist for weeks, because the two tracks affected by the derailment — which are both “shot right now” — may take weeks to repair. Because of a bridge replacement project, those two tracks are the only way in and out of New York City by train from that part of Connecticut.

Workers will need to not only remove disabled trains, but also remove the tracks, regrade the rail bed, then lay down the tracks again, according to Finch.

“This is our pipeline to New York City, and it’s going to be shut down for some time,” the mayor said. “And it’s going to cost this region a great deal of money, frankly, not just to repair it but the lost wages and the lost economy.”

Virginia’s Department of Emergency Management is holding a drill next Tuesday, simulating what it would be like if there were a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Virginia.

The drill will include actors playing distraught earthquake survivors and emergency shelters will even be set up.

Experts said a strong earthquake could do even more extensive damage than the August 2011 earthquake.

James Hardigan pleaded guilty to embezzlement on Thursday.

Prosecutors said that during Hargigan’s tenure, he opened an investment account for the VCU Dental Faculty Practice Association without the group’s knowledge.

Hardigan is then accused of moving more than $100,000 of the group’s money into his personal account.

Hardigan’s sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 9.

While no one is running against Cuccinelli for the Republican nomination, there is plenty of competition for the Lt. Governor and Attorney General offices.

Seven Republican candidates are running for LG and two are running for Attorney General.

The seven LG candidates are: Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, E.W. Jackson, Scott Lingamfelter, Steve Martin, Pete Snyder, Corey Stewart, and Susan Stimpson.

The two AG candidates are Rob Bell and Mark Obenshain.

Garren Shipley, a spokesman for the Republican Party of Virginia, says both races are toss ups and it is unclear who are the frontrunners.

“It is completely unknown at this point. Even us folks at the RPV have been trying to figure out which way the winds are blowing and we can’t,” Shipley told CBS 6 political reporter Joe St. George.

The candidates for LG and Attorney General will be voted on by an estimated 13,000 delegates who will be inside the Richmond Coliseum.

The winner must receive 50 percent plus one to be called the nominee.

For the LG offices, a maximum of four ballots will take place.

After each ballot, the bottom two candidates will drop off.

While the LG ballot is expected to last to take four ballots, the AG race is expected to be decided after one ballot.

Bell is currently a State Delegate while Obenshain is a State Senator.

Both have legal experience with Bell serving as a former prosecutor and Obenshain serving as a constitutional lawyer for over 20 years.

So why a convention and not a primary election like what the Democratic party will hold on June 11?

Polliticos say it is because Republican insiders did not want a battle for the GOP nomination to take place between Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Lt. Governor Bill Bolling.

Candidates however argue this method is the most affective and the most cost-efficient for taxpayers.

Perhaps as a sign of this being a new era in Republican politics, Governor Bob McDonnell will not be speaking at the convention.

In court Friday all three suspects waived their rights to a preliminary hearing and did not request bail.

When police searched a home of the suspects they found 19 guns and a million in cash. Another million dollars have been taken from four different bank accounts used by the suspects.

The three have been charged with multiple counts of fraud and more charges could be coming.
