You will soon be able to make phone calls on one airline when you fly.

Virgin Atlantic is installing new technology on planes to make it possible. That technology makes the plane at as if it is a cell phone tower.

That technology will allow passengers to use their phones mid-flight, without interfering with a plane’s electrical equipment.

To pay for the new technology, Virgin Atlantic will have to pay a new cell phone fee of between $3 and $9.

By the CNN Wire Staff

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Barack Obama, in awarding an overdue posthumous Medal of Honor to a Vietnam hero Wednesday, paid tribute to soldiers who received a cold reception when they returned home from the Southeast Asian war.

“This month, we’ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War,” Obama said at the White House ceremony. “A time when, to our shame, the soldiers didn’t receive the respect and the thanks that they deserve. A mistake that must never be repeated.”

Obama, who presented Army Spec. Leslie Sabo Jr.’s medal to his widow, Rose Mary Sabo Brown, singled out Sabo’s 101st Airborne Division unit, Bravo Company, as typifying selfless and patriotic service by Vietnam veterans.

“You did your job, you served with honor, you made us proud and, as Les would have wanted it, I ask members of Bravo Company to stand and accept the gratitude of our nation,” the president said.

A long applause accompanied the recognition.

Sabo, of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, was killed May 10, 1970, near the border with Cambodia.

But it wasn’t until 1999, when a 101st Airborne veteran was doing research at the National Archives, did the box with Sabo’s Medal of Honor paperwork surface. That set the wheels in motion for Wednesday’s eventual honor.

“Today, 42 years after that sacrifice, we are setting the record straight,” Obama said. “This story was almost lost to history.”

He and Rose Mary Brown paid tribute to that researcher, Alton Mabb.

Brown, speaking after the ceremony, said the seven other men who died on May 10, 1970, should be remembered as heroes.

“I know a piece of cloth and a medal won’t bring him back,” she said. “But my heart beams with pride for Leslie because he is finally receiving tribute for his sacrifices and bravery.”

Sabo’s heroism, near the Se San River in Cambodia, is documented by the Department of Defense:

“Even though his platoon was ambushed from all sides by a large enemy force, Sabo charged the enemy position, killing several enemy soldiers. He then assaulted an enemy flanking force, successfully drawing their fire away from friendly soldiers and ultimately forcing the enemy to retreat. While securing a resupply of ammunition, an enemy grenade landed nearby. Specialist Sabo picked it up, threw it, and shielded a wounded comrade with his own body — absorbing the brunt of the blast and saving his comrade’s life.

“Although wounded by the grenade blast, Sabo continued to charge the enemy’s bunker. After receiving several serious wounds from automatic weapons fire, he crawled toward the enemy emplacement and, when in position, threw a grenade into the bunker. The resulting explosion silenced the enemy fire, but also ended Specialist Sabo’s life.”

Sabo was born in Europe to a family of Hungarian refugees.

He and Brown spent just 30 days together in the fall of 1969 before he shipped out.

“We only had that one month together as a married couple,” Rose recently told CNN. “He left for Vietnam, and I never saw him again.”

Obama, before bestowing the award, provided details of Sabo’s sacrifice.

“He saved his comrades, who meant more to him than life.”

CNN’s Larry Shaughnessy contributed to this report.

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Leave four-wheels behind for two and try cycling to work on National Bike to Work Day.

May is National Bike Month and across the country cities are hosting National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18.

In Richmond, there will be Commuter Convoys departing around the city, so that cyclists can ride with others.

There are a total of six group rides departing from various locations in the city. The groups each have a contact person. All groups will converge on Monroe Park for a 7:15 a.m. gathering. [Download our weather app]

Local bike advocates RideRichmond say that riders will be asked to sign-up with the ride leader. What is known as a “cue sheet” will be handed out with directions.

Arrival time at Monroe Park is slated for 7:15, when Deputy Secretary of Transportation David Tyeryar will present a proclamation to Mayor Dwight Jones.

Then at 7:30, both Tyeryar and Jones will ride with the group of cyclists down Franklin Street, towards the Capital.

There are no formal group rides on the return trip, though anyone who wishes to ride home with other may meet at Monroe Park at 4:45 p.m., with a scheduled 5 p.m. departure.

The League of American Bicyclists recently posted data released by the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey that shows less than one percent of American workers use a bicycle as their primary mode of transportation to work.

The advocacy groups said this number does show nearly 40 percent growth since 2000, but also indicated the work which needs to be done in communities to truly integrate bicycling as a form of transportation.

Data from 2010 shows that Richmond has a higher percentage of cyclists than any other city/town in Virginia.

WASHINGTON (WTVR) – Music legend Chuck Brown, known as the “Godfather of Go-Go” music, died Wednesday, according to Brown’s manager.

The 75-year-old Brown had been in the intensive care unit of Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, WUSA-TV reports.

Sources said Brown contracted pneumonia in the hospital after having blood clots removed from his legs. He had originally been admitted to the hospital for arthritis, according to WUSA.

Brown had not been performing for about two months. This promoted numerous rumors online about his death earlier this year.

It’s not Carmen Sandiego you need to wonder about, but rather John Waters. Where in the U.S. is John Waters?

Based on these tweets, it doesn’t appear that he’s in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland.

It appears that he’s hitchhiking across the United States. This Twitter user posted that they picked him up hitchhiking in Ohio, and that he carries a mixtape to listen to on the road.

Just picked up John Waters hitchhiking in the middle of Ohio.. No joke.
People on twitter had their doubts.

@stevekeros steve it is absolutely 100% pinky sworn true.
The group in the van that picked him up is a group out of New York, called Here We Go Magic. They are traveling on a tour promoting their new album ‘A Different Ship.’

According to the tour schedule it looks like the band has a show tonight in Bloomington, Indiana.

Apparently John Waters bought them lunch. They plan on dropping off Mr. Waters as they call him in Indianapolis.

Mr. Waters is headed across the US– I think we're dropping him in Indianapolis if u want to grab him next.
By Todd Sperry

WASHINGTON (CNN) — For overweight Americans, and those looking for a healthier lifestyle, the claim was almost too good to be true — wear Skechers Shape-ups footwear and watch the pounds melt away. At a news conference Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission said the shoemaker’s claims weren’t true and alleged Skechers violated federal law by misleading consumers.

According to the FTC, Skechers agreed to pay a hefty $40 million fine to settle charges the California-based company deceived consumers by making “unfounded claims that Shape-ups would help people lose weight, and strengthen and tone their buttocks, legs and abdominal muscles.”

The company enlisted high profile celebrities Kim Kardashian and Brooke Burke to sell the shoes.

Besides Shape-ups, Skechers also made deceptive claims about other products including Resistance Runner, Toners and Tone-up shoes, the FTC alleges.

“Skechers’ unfounded claims went beyond stronger and more toned muscles. The company even made claims about weight loss and cardiovascular health,” said David Vladeck, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

As part of the settlement, customers who bought Skechers “toning” shoes will be eligible for refunds either directly from the FTC or through a court-approved class action lawsuit, officials said.

Wednesday’s announcement was the culmination of a months-long investigation involving the FTC and attorneys general from 44 states and the District of Columbia.

FTC officials highlighted a Skechers television ad featuring the endorsement of chiropractor Dr. Steven Gautreau. In the ad Gautreau cited an “independent” clinical study he conducted testing the shoes’ benefits.

The FTC said the study results Gautreau promoted weren’t factual, and alleged the company hid the fact that Gautreau is married to a Skechers marketing executive. The FTC also said Gautreau was compensated for his endorsement, which wasn’t made clear in the commercial.

Skechers introduced Shape-ups in 2009, and sales peaked a year later. The FTC called Skechers an industry leader in the booming business of toning footwear. Estimated sales were close to $1 billion industrywide in 2010, the FTC said. The toning shoes Skechers sold cost between $60 and $100 a pair.

As part of an expensive campaign to promote the fitness benefits of Shape-ups, the company unveiled a scantly dressed Kim Kardashian peddling the shoes during the Super Bowl in 2011.

Brooke Burke’s ads claimed the shoes would help improve her cousin’s posture, mother’s legs and give her brother a tighter core. Additionally, Burke’s ad told consumers “the newest way to burn calories and tone and strengthen muscles was to tie their Shape-up shoe laces,” the FTC said.

“The FTC’s message, for Skechers and other national advertisers, is to shape up your substantiation or tone down your claims,” Vladeck said.

Under the FTC’s settlement, the company is barred from any advertising making similar claims unless it’s backed up by scientific evidence.

What Skechers plans to do with the Shape-ups brand remains to be seen. An ad featuring Burke touting “the next generation of Shape-ups” remained on the company’s website Wednesday morning.

According to the FTC, the commission files a complaint when it has “reason to believe” that the law has been or is being violated. The FTC says despite Skechers agreement to pay a fine, the complaint is not a court ruling or an admission that the company violated any law.

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) – Virginia’s political climate is getting more toxic. That’s the message from a new survey of Virginia’s Voters published by Christopher Newport University.

When asked, 34% of Virginia voters said state politics have grown less civil in the last five years. Only 11% said they felt state politics had become more civil.

CBS 6 Political Analyst Dr. Bob Holsworth says there may be two reasons behind the perceived shift.

First, an overall shift in the attitude of politicians toward one another.

“I think politics politics has become more of an attack dog kind of business,” Holsworth said. “People are really going after one another.

Second, the increased presence of social issues in the general assembly in recent sessions.

“There are a lot of things entering the political arena that people are uncomfortable with,” he said. “we’ve certainly seen that in Virginia over the past couple of months; all of the talk about ultrasounds, abortions, gay rights.”

“While they certainly generate a lot of attention, there are a lot of people who are uncomfortable with the topics in general, and a lot of people that feel they don’t belong in politics in general.”

The poll also found that voters feel the state’s political climate has room to improve. Respondents gave it an average score of a six on a one to 10 scale.

Virginia politicians are still faring better than those on Capitol Hill. Nearly 80% of those surveyed said they feel civility in national politics has declined in the past five years.

1,018 Virginia voters were surveyed with an error of plus or minus 3.1%.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

By Paula Hancocks

(CNN) — It’s a South Korean car crash that has been viewed online 2 million times over the past week and has sparked a government-led investigation.

A couple in their 60s were driving to a department store in Daegu, 238 kilometers (148 miles) south of Seoul, when their car suddenly accelerated. Their son, who wants to be identified only by his surname, Kwon, posted the video from May 6 onto an Internet forum, he says to prove his father was not at fault.

Kwon told CNN, “My father said he heard an odd noise from the car. He thought there was something wrong, then felt the vehicle suddenly accelerating. He twisted the car wheel to the left as he was trying to avoid the cars in front of him, and that is when the vehicle accelerated at a crazy speed. He continued to avoid traffic and people but in the end, there was nowhere else to dodge, and he crashed into a car.”

The footage from a camera attached to the rearview mirror — a common practice in South Korea — shows that the car also drove through two red lights before it crashed into the stationary car at a speed believed to be 80 mph (129 kph). You can hear the couple saying, “Oh my God, what is happening, what is wrong?” The wife screams “Oh no” just before impact.

Kwon says his mother, 63, had an operation for internal bleeding and is awaiting a second operation on her back. His father, 65, suffered a fractured finger and fractured ribs.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says it is investigating the claim of sudden unintended acceleration. Sohn Young-sam, an official at the ministry, told CNN that 80 claims of such acceleration have been investigated since 2003.

Hyundai declined a CNN interview request but sent a statement saying, “The vehicle is being investigated by the Korean National Forensic Service. There is no time estimate for the conclusion of the investigation.”

Google introduces Knowledge Graph, a revamped effort to make search more intuitive

New tool divides search terms into most likely categories

Knowledge Graph begins rolling out Wednesday to users in the U.S.

By Doug Gross

(CNN) — So, let’s say you’re doing a Google search for “Kings.” Did you mean the L.A. hockey team or the Sacramento basketball team? Maybe the TV show? Or maybe you actually wanted to know something about monarchs.

Google on Wednesday announced Knowledge Graph, a significant change to how search results are delivered that the company believes will make their search engine think more like a human.

“The web pages we [currently] return for the search ‘kings,’ they’re all good,” Jack Menzel, director of product management at Google, told CNN in an interview. “You, as a human, associate those words with their real-world meaning but, for a computer, they’re just a random string of characters.”

With Knowledge Graph, which will begin rolling out to some users immediately, results will be arranged according to categories with which the search term has been associated. So, in the above example, boxes will appear with separate results for the hockey team, basketball team and TV show.

The user can then click on one of those boxes to only get results for the specific topic they were searching.

“It hones your search results right in on the task that you’re after,” Menzel said.

More specific searches, say for the name of a celebrity, will render boxes with basic information, as well as links to what Google believes are possibly related searches.

Menzel says the initial version of Knowledge Graph has information on 500 million people, places and things and uses 3.5 billion defining attributes and connections to create categories for them.

The feature will begin rolling out as early as Wednesday afternoon for some users in the United States and eventually be available on desktop, mobile and tablet searches. It will first become available in English, then in other languages, Menzel said.

(WTVR) – A news anchor in Ohio says she is certain the power of prayer works.

Stefani Schaefer, an anchor on WJW’s “Fox 8 News In The Morning,” returned to the set for the first time Wednesday since her husband was seriously injured in a construction accident nearly three weeks ago.

Schaefer thanked the thousands of viewers – and visitors to her Facebook page — for their outpouring of support and prayers, which she said are definitely working.

Schaefer also said the accident was so bad that doctors told her “the fact that he survived the fall is a true miracle.”

She is also convinced that her husband’s progress means “prayers are being answered.”

“The power of prayer is amazing!” she said. “I am seeing miracles every single day with my husband.”

PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Southern Living has named Saucy’s Walk-Up Bar.B.Q. in Petersburg as one of “The South’s Best Butt: 20 of the Best Barbecue Joints in the South.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be chosen,” said Tom McCormack, owner of Saucy’s Walk-Up. “There are a lot of people coming in off 95 and stopping in for a sandwich.”

McCormack credited good reviews on Yelp for much of that interstate business.

“We tried the pulled pork sandwich and the 1/4 chicken, both with sauce. Everything was excellent. We’ll definitely add Saucy’s into our travel plans next time we travel south past Richmond,” wrote one reviewer in April.

“Saucy’s is one of my favorite places. Their little setup is so cute and cozy, complete with picnic tables and Christmas lights. Service is like family, every time,” wrote another traveler from California.

McCormack told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil he was excited to see what kind of traffic the Southern Living ranking would generate.

Southern Living wrote about Saucy’s, “Meat smoked according to low-and-slow traditions, then swabbed with sauces such as mustard-jalapeno.”

Charles Riley

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – The director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday that the agency has opened an investigation into JPMorgan Chase, the nation’s largest bank.

“All I can say is that we have opened a preliminary investigation,” Robert Mueller said in response to questions at an FBI oversight hearing on Capitol Hill.

Last week JPMorgan disclosed it had suffered a $2 billion trading loss on a series of complex bets on credit default swaps, a kind of derivative sometimes used to hedge against risk.

It remains unclear what potential crimes the FBI may be investigating, and Mueller declined to answer questions on that topic Wednesday, saying only that the agency had opened a preliminary investigation.

Media reports also indicate the Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an investigation of its own, a move that would be expected following a trading loss of the magnitude suffered by JPMorgan.

JPMorgan shares were up slightly in trading on Wednesday, but are still down more than 11% over the previous five trading sessions.
