    WEATHER: Midwinter Cold Arrives Tuesday

The coldest air so far this season will move into Virginia tonight through Tuesday, sending Virginians scrambling for their heaviest winter clothing. The reason for the cold is the southeastward push of a very deep upper-level trough shown in the image below, allowing arctic air to overspread areas that generally don’t see this measure of cold until later in the season. The trough is centered by low pressure over the Great Lakes right where the “507” circle lies. That number, […]

    WEATHER: Tracking Much-Needed Rain

Today will be yet another dry day in the books in RVA,  pushing the 2014 rainfall deficit to over 7″.  We’ll get a little help from mother nature tomorrow, as low pressure off the Southeast coast moves northward into the Mid-Atlantic.  Here’s a snapshot of the current setup, with high pressure to our northwest, responsible for the cool day today, and the low to our south: Rain will be most likely across eastern Virginia, with lower probabilities and amounts the […]

First 90-degree Day of 2014 in RVA

The pleasant weather from earlier in the week is nothing more than a memory now that Mother Nature, as she so often does in Virginia, has flipped a switch and hurled us headlong into summer.  More scientifically speaking, deep layer southwesterly flow has drawn a summer-like air mass into the Mid-Atlantic, resulting in Richmond’s first 90-degree day of the year.  The high today reached 91, coming up one degree shy of tying the record of 92 set in 1936.  The […]

    WEATHER: Severe Weather Possible Friday

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: We are tracking our threat for strong to severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. The most likely window in central Virginia for rain and storms will be between 2PM and 10PM. This threat comes from a small, but potent, storm system with a history of producing severe weather (damaging winds and hail) in the Midwest yesterday. The warm front linked to the low pressure center will lift north into central Virginia, with a cold front coming at […]
