    VSU wins 1st NCAA Tournament game, VUU’s Women are in Regional Final

    The Virginia State Trojans made school history on Saturday by winning an NCAA Tournament game for the first time, 76-66 over Fairmont St.  The Trojans got a team high 16 points from Kevin Williams and 13 from junior guard Javon Moore as VSU became the first CIAA Men’s team to advance to the second round since Shaw did it in 2012.     Virginia Union makes school history in NCAA Tournament

    The Virginia Union Lady Panthers made school history by hosting a NCAA Division II Tournament game, they made more history after they beat Indiana (PA)91-72 for their first tournament win at Barco Stevens.  Kiana Johnson led the way with 27 points and 10 assists.  Lady Walker had 24 and 14 boards while Taylor White chipped in with 17 points and 17 rebounds.     State Champions crowned at the Siegel Center

    Several area schools won State Championships at the Siegel Center.  In 6A, Cosby beat Langley 42-37 for their 3rd straight Girls State Title.  Jocelyn Jones scored 18 points along with 10 rebounds.  Tyra Whitehead added 12 and 16 boards. In 4A, the Monacan Chiefs won the Boys and Girls State Title.  The Chiefs won their first Boys’ title after they beat Lake Taylor 57-53.  Nick Parks had 15 points and five assist in the victory.     VCU gets a share of A-10 Title

    Last weekend of the regular season in College Basketball and conference titles were up for grabs.  In the A-10, Dayton beat VCU 68-67 in overtime and gained a three-way share of the crown with the Rams and St. Bonaventure.  The Flyers clinched the top seed with the win.  VCU will be the #2 seed in the conference tournament in Brooklyn.     VSU wins CIAA Men’s Title

    Javon Moore and Kevin Williams combined to score 54 points as Virginia State beat Livingstone 89-79 for their first CIAA Championship since 1988.  The Trojans used a 12-0 run to start the second half which proved to be the difference as they ended the Blue Bears two-year reign as conference champs.     VUU wins CIAA Women’s Title

    The Virginia Union Lady Panthers beat Shaw University 70-66 to win the CIAA Women’s Championship for the first time since 1982.  Kiana Johnson, the reigning CIAA Player of the Year, scored 32 points and was named Tournament MVP.  Lady Walker added 23 points and 20 rebounds as she was named to the All-Tournament.  Rahni Bell was also named to the All-Tournament team.

    For the first time since 2004, the Virginia Union Lady Panthers are in the CIAA Title Game.  Kiana Johnson, the reigning CIAA Player of the Year, scored 27 of her game high 41 points in the first half to lead three players in double figures.

    VSU advances to CIAA Title Game

    Virginia State ended a 25 year drought and advanced to the CIAA Men’s Title game after they beat Bowie St. 81-70.  Elijah Moore led three Trojans in double figures with 18 as they will play in the conference championship game for the first time since 1991 when they lost to Hampton.
