HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A driver that Virginia State Police said was armed with a weapon when he approached two officers was fatally shot on Interstate 64 in Henrico, following a pursuit Thursday morning.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday, March 1, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to stop a vehicle traveling on Interstate 64 at Glenside Drive in Henrico County, a Virginia State Police spokesperson said. The vehicle did not stop.

"The suspect continued onto I-95 and then eastbound on I-64," State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said.

After the vehicle crashed in the median at the 198 mile marker, the  driver exited his vehicle armed with a weapon, which Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett was a machete.

"The adult male was subsequently shot," Geller said.

The man was wanted on a felony arrest warrant out of Richmond. Police will release the name of the deceased driver and details of the warrant at a later time. The driver was the only person in the vehicle and speeds in the pursuit were between 70 and 80 mph, Geller said.

A VSP agent and a U.S. Marshal both fired shots at the man. Geller said they attempted to render aid immediately, and that the man died at the scene.  No police officers were hurt during the incident.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, as the task force involved in the felony arrest warrant is multi-jurisdictional. Police are working to identify any footage taken of the event.

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips and photos here.
