UPDATE: All lanes are now open and the detour has been lifted.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- HAZMAT crews are on the scene after a tanker overturned on E. Hundred Road (Route 10) in Chesterfield County Monday evening.

Police said the crashed happened around 6:30 p.m. after the driver attempted a u-turn and the trailer got caught in a culvert and overturned.

There is no word what the tanker spilled, but police say it is 5,000 gallons of a corrosive liquid, which are usually strong acids or strong bases. Investigators are calling the incident a HAZMAT situation, but say there is no threat to public safety.

Officials say the leak is slow and contained.

There were no injuries in the crash.

Chesterfield Police and Fire and EMS also responded to the crash scene.

The crash has closed all lanes on Route 10 in both directions near Enon Church Road. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route until further notice. Expect delays.

Police said the goal was to have road back opened by morning commute, but due to the type of material involved, the timeline is unclear. Officials must bring in a specialized tanker to transfer the liquid from the overturned tanker. Right now, the only options are located in Florida and Baltimore.

After the spill is cleaned up, environmentalist will come to the scene and access the situation.

Charges are pending against driver.

Drivers are encouraged to use the following detour route:

  • Eastbound E. Hundred Rd./Rt. 10 - Take Enon Church Rd. south to Point of Rocks Rd. north back to E. Hundred Rd./Rt. 10
  • Westbound E. Hundred Rd./Rt. 10 - Take Point of Rocks Rd. south to Enon Church Rd. north back to E. Hundred Rd./Rt. 10
