NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Authorities said they do not suspect foul play after discovering a man's body in a Newport News home Saturday morning.

Newport News Police performed a welfare check at a home in the Mulberry Village community in the 400 block of Rivers Ridge Circle around 9:30 a.m.

A neighbor, who spokewith WTKR on the condition of anonymity, said the man’s nephew in California contacted him Thursday to check on his uncle.

“I told him I couldn’t do it Friday, because I was going out of town, but I’d do it on Saturday,” he said.

When he went to check on Saturday morning, he said grew concerned by an odor coming from inside the home. When there was no answer when he knocked at the door several times, he called police.

“I gave them the key," he said. "They entered the house and found the gentleman.”

Officials said they believe the man, who was in his late sixties, had been "deceased for multiple years."

In fact, the man who went to check on the man said the last time he saw his neighbor was two years ago.

“But he was very secluded and didn’t want to be bothered with a whole bunch of people,” the man explained.

Other folks who live in the neighborhood were stunned by the news because they assumed the man had moved in with family or into a retirement home.

“Summer has come," one woman said. "We didn’t smell anything. Nothing was off.”
