RICHMOND, Va. -- In today’s “CBS 6 Gives” Melissa Hipolit surprised a long-time custodian with Richmond Public Schools while he was at his job at Swansboro Elementary School.

With the help of our friends at Union Bank and Trust, Melissa made his holiday season a little brighter.

Mr. Scott has spent 26 years working with Richmond schools, 13 of which at Swansboro Elementary.

Coworkers said Mr. Scott always goes the extra mile.  He stays late to walk people to their cars, and does the work of three custodians.

They said he makes students feel special by asking them for help.

Melissa Hipolit surprised him with a gift for his whole family. She gave him a $50 gift card to the movies, and $200 gift card to take his family out to dinner.

She had been told by someone who works at the schools that he had previously said he was hoping to take his family to the movies and dinner for Christmas.

“Mr. Scott was surprised, stunned, and gracious,” Hipolit said. ‘He said he always just comes in and works hard and never expects anything in return.”

The students clapped as they watched the surprise.

Every day through December, a CBS 6 team member will surprise someone in the community with a random act of kindness.

The CBS 6 Month of Giving is possible due to a partnership with Union Bank and Trust.
