RVA Christmas tree traditions are fairly new

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond is known as a town rich in history and tradition.

Our State Capitol Christmas/Holiday tree-lighting tradition is even older than the one at the U.S. Capitol.

But neither is really very old. The one in DC started in ‘64 - 1964, that is.

Ours dates back to 1959, even though our Capitol building is 230 years old.

It’s not all that surprising. Dragging a tree into your house to decorate it really didn’t catch on in the United States until the mid-1800s. And they are a bit of a fire hazard.

We did find some newer tree traditions in RVA, including the white and pink wonder at Quirk Hotel, a tree made of books at the Virginia Library and a “Charlie Brown tree” in Richmond’s Registrar’s Office that has been an annual tradition for 22 years.

Check them out in our video report for this week’s RVA Revealed.
