CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A 16-year-old Monacan High School student may be facing charges after police say he brought a BB gun inside the school Tuesday.

A school resource officer (SRO) received a report that the teen may be in possession of a weapon on school property. The student, a 16-year-old male, ran out of the school, but left his backpack behind, according to police.

The SRO discovered the BB gun inside the student’s backpack and confiscated the weapon.

No one was injured.

“Police received a report that someone matching the student's description was seen in a nearby neighborhood. Officers responded and located the student and a vehicle that was in the area to pick him up,” Chesterfield Police spokeswoman Liz Caroon said.

The officer completed a juvenile criminal complaint for the student for possession of a weapon on school property and asked that a juvenile petition be issued, police said.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, a different 16-year-old, was also wanted in relation to a separate BB gun incident. The juvenile was found to be wanted on a detention order for felony assault.

In the November 27 incident a 17-year-old male was struck by a BB fired by the suspect in a passing vehicle. That victim suffered minor injuries.

“Aside from the parties involved knowing each other, there is no indication these two incidents are related,” said Caroon.

Chesterfield Schools spokesman Shawn Smith sent CBS 6 a statement that read:

"The Monacan principal shared with parents that their administration received word today that a student may have brought a bb gun on school grounds.  This information was immediately acted upon by Monacan's administration and  Chesterfield Police were also involved.  Appropriate student discipline is underway and school administrators also shared with parents that they greatly appreciate the information provided by students and staff that allowed swift action in a safe an orderly manner.
