RICHMOND, Va. – CBS 6 recently introduced viewers to an injured Marine who spoke to his pregnant wife for the first time in more than five months.

It happened at Richmond’s Fisher House, just before a baby shower for the wife of Corporal Dustin Braun.

Samantha Braun is currently living at the Fisher House, which is located on the campus of McGuire VA Medical Center. The home provides free lodging to the families of veterans receiving treatment at the hospital.

Dustin is receiving specialty brain injury rehab services, due to severe injuries he suffered in a car accident back in June.

A spokesperson for the Fisher House said that at one-point Tuesday, the 23-year-old man looked at his wife and said “I love you.” They said that was the first time he had spoken since the crash.

CBS 6 was there Tuesday for the baby shower. But that wasn’t the only reason we were there. CBS 6 reporter Jasmine Norwood had a special surprise for the couple.

“We didn’t just come to share your story or document everything that you guys are doing,” said Norwood. “CBS 6 wanted to gift you guys $200 for whatever baby goodness you need or mommy goodness you need.”

“You guys have been such an inspiration, so strong and positive, so just thank you for everything that you’ve done for our country Dustin,” added Norwood.

Samantha gave birth to baby boy Wednesday morning.

Hunter Curtis Braun was born at 7:42 a.m. the health baby boy weighed 8 pounds and 10 ounces. Samantha and Hunter are doing well!

Every day through December, a CBS 6 team member will surprise someone in the community with a random act of kindness.
