CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A woman was strangled outside her Chesterfield apartment Monday night, according to Chesterfield Police.

"The victim was outside her apartment when she was approached by an unknown person who strangled her until she became unconscious," a Chesterfield Police spokesperson said. "When the victim regained consciousness, she entered her apartment and called police."

“I’m really concerned of her and her safety and how she feels now,” said the victim’s neighbor Mary Smith.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries; she was treated and released."

The assault happened Monday, at about 8:45 p.m., along the 11300 block of Briarmont Road in the Axis147 apartment complex.

Neighbors say they were shocked to hear about such a crime in their quiet community.

“I’ve been here 4 years and nothing like this has ever happened,” said a resident.

“It’s not safe anywhere not here not anywhere that’s just the way it is today and that part is concerning to me,” said the victim’s neighbor Frank Julien.

The complex distributed a letter to residents warning that criminal activity had taken place and to be vigilant.
