PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police have identified a man who was killed in a shooting that injured three others early Saturday morning.

The incident occurred on North Sycamore Street around 2:45 a.m. shortly after a nearby theater let out following an event. Officers arrived and found four men that had been shot.

One victim, identified by police as 26-year-old Mark O. Thornton of Dinwiddie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the three other victims are men whose ages range from 27 to 30 years old. One of the other victims was med-flighted to VCU Medical Center and the other two were taken to Southside Regional Medical Center.

One of the victims taken to Southside Regional was then transported to VCU Medical Center for further treatment.

The conditions of those three men are unknown at this time.

Lt. Greg Geist confirmed detectives found at least 40 shell casings surrounding the black Lexus where Thornton was found dead.

"It tells me there were numerous shooters or weapons with a lot of ammunition in them," Geist said.

Witnesses described watching people run away the shooting scene seeking shelter.

"This crime is ridiculous," said one Petersburg resident. "It’s just too much violence and too much killing. I’m 62 years old. I’ve been here all my life and it’s never been this rough."

Police are still investigating the circumstances that might have lead to the shooting. There is currently no information on a suspect or a motive.

Police are asking anyone who may have heard or saw anything in the area to contact the Petersburg/Dinwiddie Crime Solvers at 804-861-1212.
