CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- A prank in the hallways of Caroline County High School briefly put the school on lockdown Thursday morning.

Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa said crews were called to the school at 7:25 a.m. after a school resource officer directing drop-off traffic spotted students running out of the building.

That school resource officer ran into the building and called for back up as a student called 911 reporting shots had been fired at the school, officials said.

"Please do not be alarmed as there is no active threat," a sheriff's office spokesperson posted on social media.

Lippa said the firecrackers likely sounded like gunfire in hallway.

The school was placed on lockdown during investigation.

Officials said the incident was marked under control by 7:45 a.m.

Lippa said charges are pending against the 16-year-old who set off the firecrackers.

This is a developing story. Witnesses can send news tips and photos here.
