Suspicious HAZMAT situation evacuates Manchester apartment building

RICHMOND, Va. -- Firefighters are investigating a suspicious HAZMAT situation at a South Richmond apartment building Monday afternoon.

Sources in the police department tell CBS 6 that they were originally called the scene for a suspicious situation. After arriving on scene, Richmond and State Police deemed the situation was not criminal in nature, and pulled out of the scene, to allow HAZMAT crews to investigate.

The call came in just after noon Monday for a apartment building located  in the 700 block of Stockton Street.

Those sources say when fire fighters went inside the apartment this afternoon they found some suspicious canisters with a suspicious substance inside.

Several units inside a Manchester apartment building were evacuated as crews investigated the report. The building was only under a partial evacuation, according to police just the units around the unit which is the focus of the investigation.

There is no word if those residents have been allowed to re-enter their homes at this time.

As of 5 p.m., fire fighters were still inside the apartment investigating. Everett Street is blocked off while the investigation continues.
