RICHMOND, Va. -- A child was struck by a car near the Hull Street Branch Library in South Richmond Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The child, described as a girl under the age of 10, ran out into the street and the driver was unable to stop in time, police said.

The girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Charges were not expected to be filed against the driver, police said.

Police were called to the 1400 block of Hull Street Road, near West 15th Street, at about 12:55 p.m.

Investigators said the child was with two adults who crossed Hull Street and then realized the girl was not with them.

The child was hit as she attempted to cross the street.
