RICHMOND, Va. — A woman escaped a house fire Thursday afternoon in east Richmond.

The fire was reported at about 12:24 p.m. along Delaware Avenue, off Meadowbridge Road.

The fire was marked under control in about 10 minutes.

“A female victim was lying in the front yard that a neighbor had rescued through a window to the fire room by a neighbor,” a Richmond Fire spokesperson said. “Our investigation reveals that the fire started in the front bedroom as a result of discarded smoking materials at the foot of the bed, catching the mattresses on fire.”

She was treated at the scene by Richmond Ambulance Authority, then taken to VCU Medical Center with significant burns to her face, nasal cavities, and hair.

“The victim who occupies that room suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her whole body and is in critical condition at the VCU Medical Center Burn Unit,” the spokesperson said. “The fire has been ruled accidental.”

Three people were displaced as a result of the fire.
