PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting early Friday morning in Petersburg.

Police were called to a convenience store in the 3100 block of Crater Road at about 2 a.m. shortly after a nearby nightclub closed for the night.

A crowd had gathered at the Shell station, which was closed at the time of the incident. When police arrived, an officer witnessed people fighting, a Petersburg Police spokesperson said.

"The officer observed an individual involved in the disturbance firing a weapon and he discharged his weapon striking the subject," Petersburg Police Captain Brian Braswell said. "The adult male received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer involved was not injured and has been placed on an administrative assignment until a formal review of the incident can be completed."

No bystanders were hurt.

“I was just making a delivery and heard... three gunshots going off,” a witness told WTVR CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil.

The man, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said a few minutes after he heard the first round of gunfire, he heard three more shots.

“And then I hear sirens and more gunshots,” he said. “And then the next thing I know, there's an ambulance coming down the road… followed by a police car.”

Petersburg police said the officer involved in the shooting was reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, as is procedure.

The reason the gas station was closed was because of past problems when the nightclub let out.
