RICHMOND, Va. -- Family members identified the man fatally shot Thursday morning in Richmond as 24-year-old Jerode Greene, of Henrico.

Greene was shot just after 8 a.m. along the 4200 block of Chamberlayne Avenue.

Police said Greene was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m.

He was visiting family when he was shot, relatives told CBS 6 Crime Insider Jon Burkett. Those relatives said they had no idea why anyone would want to kill Greene.

"It is believed there were multiple witnesses in the area at the time, including those who were traveling to work or school," Det. Victoria Griffith-Matko said. "We urge anyone who has any information to come forward. Any tip can help us make an arrest and take these individuals off the street."

They said they heard him get into an argument with someone prior to the shooting.

Greene leaves behind four children.

Richmond Police said Greene's last known address was in the 200 block of Winston Street in Henrico County.

Detectives are investigating Greene's death as a homicide.

Anyone with information that could help investigators is asked to call Major Crimes Detectives Victoria Griffith-Matko at 804-646-3912 or James Baynes at 804-646-3617 or contact Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
