Midlothian father killed when pickup slammed into his car on 288

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY – A husband and father of two was killed in a crash early Tuesday morning on Route 288, near Chester Road in Chesterfield County, when a car crossed the median and struck another vehicle, according to Virginia State Police.

The two vehicle crash occurred at 12:50 a.m., police said.

A 1994 Chevrolet pickup traveling south on Route 288 ran off the road to the left, into the median, crossing into the northbound lanes. That is when the pickup struck a 1996 Cadillac.

The pickup overturned and the Cadillac continued head-on into the guardrail.

The operator of the 1996 Cadillac, Alonza Jefferson, Jr., 46 of Midlothian, Virginia died at the scene; he was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the pickup, Matthew P. Pernell, 27 of Emporia, Virginia was transported to MCV Hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries; he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Alcohol is considered a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.   According to online court records, Pernell has previous DUI charges.

Charges are pending.
