HANOVER COUNTY, Va. --Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fatal crash on Mountain Road (Route 33) in Hanover.
The driver, 16-year-old Jaeden Cortez Athey, of Bumpass, was killed in the single-vehicle crash Monday at about 11:30 p.m., according to a Hanover Sheriff's spokesman.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Mazda sedan, occupied by only the driver, was travelling west on Mountain Road, ran off the right shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree," Hanover Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt James Cooper said. "Investigators are still collecting information and consulting with the Medical Examiner to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic incident."
The crash closed lanes on Mountain Road, between Bourne and Beaver Dam Roads in Montpelier, for several hours overnight. The road fully reopened Tuesday morning.
