Driver killed, passenger ejected in Essex County crash

ESSEX COUNTY, Va. — State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash that left the driver dead and a passenger seriously injured in Essex County Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:10 a.m. on Sunnyside Road just east of Hickory Hill Road. The investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford Escort was traveling east when it ran off the road to the right, struck a tree and caught fire, ejecting a passenger from the vehicle.

The male driver of the Ford died at the scene. His body has been transported to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination and identification.

The passenger was transported via med-flight to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
