POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. -- The investigation into the death of Capital One worker John R. Rafter Jr. inside his Powhatan home remained under investigation Wednesday, according to the Powhatan Sheriff's Office.

"The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has determined the death of John R. Rafter Jr. to be a homicide as the result of a gunshot wound," Powhatan Sheriff's Office Captain Jeffery Searfoss said. "There is no reason to believe at this time that there is any threat to the public at large."

Court documents obtained by CBS 6 showed a complaint had been filed in circuit court in a domestic situation that involved the 48-year-old father.

"A large amount of evidence has been and continues to be collected," Searfoss said. "The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Virginia State Police, The Chesterfield County Police Department, The Richmond Police Department, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Powhatan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Office, and the Office of the Attorney General with this case."

A 911 call led investigators to Rafter's Flint Hill Road on Friday morning at about 8:45 a.m.

"Anyone who may have witnessed anything out of the ordinary... is highly encouraged to contact the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office at 804-598-5656 as soon as possible," Searfoss said.

Neighbors questioned who would want to kill a man so devoted to his children.

"He really loved those kids,” neighbor Ryan Boggs said. “He really was a neighbor everyone wishes they had. He always came over and wanted to hang out, just so friendly."

Rafter was a master software engineer at Capital One, according to sources.

His co-workers created a GoFundMe for his funeral costs, and for his children.
