RICHMOND, Va. -- The man whose alleged actions led to the lock down of buildings in downtown Richmond has been charged with bank robbery.
Joseph D. Matz, 47, of no known address, was accused of robbing the Wells Fargo at 801 East Main Street at about 12:53 p.m. Thursday.
"A bank employee reported a male handed a note to tellers demanding cash. He received cash and left on foot southbound towards Kanawha Plaza," a Richmond Police spokesman said. "Officers and detectives responded, circulated in the area, and quickly developed information that led to the suspect being arrested as he ran southbound across the Manchester Bridge."
Riverfront Plaza East Tower, on East Byrd Street near the James River was placed on lock down while police searched for Matz. The lock down was lifted just after 3 p.m., according to workers.
