RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond SPCA is once again helping animals in need, this time from the other side of the world.
Friday night, 14 dogs and puppies arrived in Richmond all the way from South Korea.
The 14 pets were rescued from a dog meat farm in the county.
The rescue effort is in conjunction with the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International.
The organizations are working to end the dog meat trade in South Korea by closing dog meat farms and offering farmers seed money to begin cultivating crops.
The pets were vaccinated and quarantined while they awaited transport to the United States.
“The Richmond SPCA is grateful for this opportunity to help these dogs find the loving homes they deserve right here in Richmond,” said a Richmond SPCA spokesperson. “We are fortunate to live in a city that values the lives of animals, and we know Richmonders will follow this story with great interest, as this will be the first time Humane Society International has arranged a transport of dogs rescued from the South Korean meat trade to our area.”
The 14 dogs and puppies will be given all the necessary care to prepare them for adoption in the coming weeks.
