HENRICO COUNTY, VA. – Virginia State delegate Jennifer McClellan has been declared the Democratic nominee for the 9th Senate District Special Election in January.

McClellan currently represents the 71st District in the House of Delegates, which she has served in since 2006.

“It is a distinct honor to be named the Democratic nominee for the 9th State Senate District,” said McClellan. “I humbly accept the nomination and am looking onward to the Special Election on January 10th.”

Senate District 9 is open after State Senator Donald McEachin won the congressional race for Virginia’s 4th district seat in November.

After McEachin’s departure, the 9th Senate District Legislative Nominating Committee was charged with carrying out the nominating process by which Delegate McClellan was selected.

McClellan was the only candidate who filed for the nomination. The special caucuses scheduled for Saturday, December 3 to select a Democratic candidate for district has been canceled.

Parts of Richmond, Henrico, and Hanover, along with all of Charles City County make up Virginia’s 9th State Senate District.

The Special Election will be held on January 10, 2017 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
